What is Massachusetts Controlled Substance Registration?

Before getting in to the record updates you'll make in Vault CRM, let's go over Massachusetts Controlled Substance Registration (MCSR). In Massachusetts, healthcare providers and organizations handling controlled substances must obtain an MCSR. This state-issued license ensures individuals and facilities comply with state laws governing the use, storage, and distribution of controlled substances. Whether you’re a doctor prescribing medication, a pharmacist dispensing it, or a facility storing it, the MCSR is an essential credential for lawful practice in the state. It works in tandem with federal regulations overseen by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) to safeguard public health.

Healthcare practitioners in Massachusetts must hold an MCSR for at least one place of business or professional practice to be eligible for controlled substance sampling at Massachusetts addresses.

What is Schedule VI?

You may have heard about Massachusetts' Schedule VI. In addition to creating a special license, Massachusetts uniquely recognizes a category of controlled substances known as Schedule VI. These are all “normal” prescription products which are not included in Schedules II-V, and are not considered controlled substances in other states. Although these products are not considered controlled substances at the federal level or in other states, HCPs must have a valid MCSR license in order to receive Schedule VI products in Massachusetts.

It’s important to ensure your users are in compliance with these requirements when sampling to HCPs in Massachusetts. Read on to learn more about how you can handle MCSR’s unique schedule categories and requirements in Vault CRM.
